You and Me Both

Despite a hugely successful album in Upstairs at Eric’s, Vince Clarke never intended Yazoo to be a band. It was only at the insistence of his publishers that he didn’t repeat the pattern of one album then leave as he had done in Depeche Mode. However, he made it clear to Alison that after this second Yazoo album, he no longer wanted to work with her. 

Further tensions grew because Vince refused to be involved in promotional duties – leaving Alison to speak to the press alone, and even in the case of Sotto Le Stelle, an Italian TV summer broadcast, had to perform Nobody’s Diary alone. 

Recording You and Me Both proved a divided experience as Alison recalled in an interview with The Quietus: “He’d go in in the mornings, I’d go in in the evenings, he’d do something then later I’d do something on top of it. It was like a patchwork album where there was no discussion or getting excited about each others’ things. We just worked separately.”
