Alison Moyet, British singer songwriter, has been awarded an MBE in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours. Alison joins the Members of the Order of the British Empire, and is recognised for her services to music.
She commented on receiving the honour:
“I have been gifted an MBE on the occasion of the Queen’s Birthday. A remarkable, happy-making 60th birthday surprise for me. Basildon’s Alf with extra initials. I didn’t see that coming.
Recognition for a life in music is always unpredictable and humbling. This doesn’t come with a goody bag or gym membership, so I don’t feel too bad a thief. Instead, I think of my grandparents who toiled so that I might prance. It makes me proud to be able to attach their history to this.
Thank you”.
Other music industry figures who are named as recipients in the Queen’s Birthday Honours today include Rick Wakeman, Lulu and Skin from Skunk Anansie.
Alison Moyet’s recording career begin in 1982 with the synth-pop band, Yazoo. She went on to top the UK album charts two years later with her first solo album, Alf. Over the course of the last four decades, Alison has won three Brit awards and was nominated for a Grammy. She has worked alongside musicians such as Nile Rodgers, Dusty Springfield, a-Ha, Michel Legrand, Johnny Marr, The Divine Comedy and Jools Holland.
From writing songs for and starring in the West End show, Smaller, to performing with a 32 piece orchestra at Burberry’s SS16 Womenswear Show during London Fashion Week, Moyet has continued to prove herself as a determined musical explorer. She has been recognised with an Icon Award at the Nordoff Robbins Silver Clef Awards and the Ivors Academy honoured Alison with a Gold Badge Award celebrating her unique contribution to music.
